Back-to-School Tips

This Year Don't Blend In!

Going back to school doesn't have to be a drag. Sure, there won't be as many lazy days out in the sun or all night movie marathons, but at least you'll be able to see your friends everyday. Maybe you're going to a different school this year? New scenes can be intimidating, but make it your resolution this year not to blend in.

Make this the year you just, well, do you.

We don't mean you dye your hair green or get a crazy piercing. We're just talking about being unapologetic about expressing your style. It doesn't have to be in a big, or flashy way.

Make a Statement with Your School Gear

An easy way to get excited for going back to the old haunt is by amping up your supply swag. Take your stuff to the next level and save yourself some money by trying out some of these easy and unique DIY ideas. Your parents may thank you.

Chalkboard Binder or Notepad

Who doesn't like to doodle in class? All you'll need to create this masterpiece is a rigid plastic binder or notepad, a small paintbrush, and some chalkboard paint. Place some old newspaper down before you start. Use the paintbrush and apply several coats of chalkboard paint to your binder. You'll want to start this project a few days before school as the paint may take several days to dry. Don't forget to bring the chalk to school!

Chalkboard Locker Frame & Magnetic Board

If you have extra chalkboard paint leftover, think about making a magnetic board for your locker. You'll need the following:

  • Hardboard or a high-density fibreboard cut to size. (Tip: find the frame you will want to use as a measuring guide.)
  • Magnetic primer.
  • Leftover chalkboard paint.
  • Your matching frame. (Tip: you will want to choose a relatively flat frame)
  • Super Glue
  • 2-4 large magnets

Shopping for the items will be the easiest part. First, you will want to apply the magnetic primer on the hardboard, and allow for proper drying times. Apply 1-2 coats, or as per paint instructions. Next, layer on the chalkboard paint. Once this has completely dried you can then glue the chosen frame around the board as well as the magnets on the opposite side.

Personalized Pencils

All you will need is washi tape. Chose a few patterns that you like and turn those boring yellow pencils into your own custom stationary.

Wear a New Outfit

If you go to a school that doesn't require a uniform, choosing your back to school outfit is a great way to express your unique style. You will feel more confident in an outfit that you are comfortable in. Just make sure you know your school's dress code as you wouldn't want to waste all that time choosing the perfect attire only to have to go home and change.

Don't be Afraid to Express Yourself

If you are nervous on your first day back, just remember that everyone else is trying to "fit in" just as much as you are. Sometimes the only way to find the people that share your sense of humour is to take a risk and crack a joke. Maybe joining that club or sports team is where you find your new friends.

Everyone in your school comes with their own unique story, so think before you judge someone. Finding things that interest you may be putting yourself "out there," but in the end, you will be happier going through school doing what you actually enjoy.
