How to Turn a Friend Into a Best Friend

Sometimes you meet a really awesome friend that you are really in sync with and you just can’t help but think about how awesome it would be if you were best friends. Although most friendships evolve on their own, there are some things you can do to help move the friendship along toward best friend status.

Spend More Time With Them

Sometimes all it takes to move from friend to best friend status is spending more time together and realizing how much you really do have in common. Include them in some of your plans and try to really get to know them.

Before long you may find that you’ve developed the best friend relationship you were hoping for, or you might find that they really aren’t best friend material after all.

Go for a Long Walk and Get Personal

Go for a long walk together. It doesn’t matter where you’re going or even if you have a destination. Becoming someone’s best friend goes beyond just hanging out together. While you’re walking you can share your hopes and dreams with them. Just go with the flow and talk about anything and everything that comes to mind.

Tell them about your plans for the future, the things you like and the things you hate. If being best friends is your destiny, they’ll share their personal stories with you too, creating a lasting bond.

Stay Connected and Chat it Up

If you’re only in contact at lunch on school days it screams friend or acquaintance, not best friend. Stay in touch through texts, Facebook, or other social media outside of school hours so you can share a few laughs and tears throughout the day or evening.

If something really great happens to you, tell your friend about it. If they message you with news, be excited for them and cheer them on if it’s good, and listen to them when they’re down.

Share Secrets With Each Other

Nothing creates a close bond more than sharing your innermost secrets with someone. However, you should start with small secrets and gradually work your way up. That way you’ll know whether you can trust the other person not to tell the whole world what you’re saying.

When you’re telling secrets, be careful not to talk negatively about other people, at least at first. You don’t want to have them worrying that you might talk negatively about them behind their back.

Involve Them in Your Pack

If they’re not already in your circle of friends, make a point of including them in an activity. They’ll appreciate the opportunity to get to meet your other friends and see what you’re like around them. If they get along with your friends, that’s great and you’ll be able to spend more time together.

If they don’t, don’t sweat it. There’s no rule that says that your best friend has to belong to your clique.

Don’t Be Too Pushy

If you’re in their face all the time or constantly stalking them, you might come off as creepy. Try to gradually form the close friendship bond. If you feel the other person pulling back or get the vibe that they just aren’t that invested in the friendship, take a step back and give them the space they need. They might already have a best friend, or maybe you’ve been coming on just a bit too strong.

If you find out along the way that being best friends just isn’t in the cards, don’t let it get you down. Sometimes people just aren’t compatible enough to become really close friends. Chalk it up to experience and move on. You’ll find another best friend candidate before you know it!
