Six Easy Tips to Stay Fit Over Summer Break

Ahhhh, summer break is finally here. You are probably breathing a big sigh of relief; the finals are over, no school for the next two to three months, no homework or projects, and FREEDOM! Here's to sleeping in, hanging out with friends, trips, and loads of fun! Whatever your plans are over summer break, chances are you haven't thought about staying fit during the time off. Unfortunately, time out of class can add up to added pounds and weaker or slower muscles.

Being off a regular schedule and being less active doesn't do your body any favors. Nor do all the yummy BBQ's, fair food, and other summertime snacks. It can easily add ten pounds or more and leave you feeling less than peppy when you return to class in the fall. But, these super easy, laid back tips will blend seamlessly into you "lax" summer.

Drink at least 64 oz. of water a day. WAIT!!! Before you skip over this one, since this seems redundant to everything you already know. Dehydration can lead to serious medical problems. However, staying hydrated should also be part of your beauty routine. Yes, skin that is hydrated has a natural glow, to add to your sun kissed look. When your body is dehydrated, it's only natural for your skin to be dry as well.

Make walking a fun friendly activity. Love spending your days at the mall with friends? Shopping is a great pastime, but combine it by walking the mall, several times, and at varying speeds. This will give your body extra movement and it will thank you. If you don't drive, try walking to a friend's house or to a nearby park. Experts recommend you take 10,000 steps a day.

Enjoy the ice cream and other sweet treats. A few treats aren't going to automatically make you gain weight. Have an "in moderation" attitude to make sure you don't overindulge. Another way to combat the extra calories is to balance them out by doing some kind of exercise.

Learn a new sport over summer. There are so many fun activities and sports that happen in the summer. It doesn't have to necessarily be an actual sport. Take up the Frisbee. Playing Frisbee can burn up to 300 calories per hour. Ping pong (table tennis), tennis, track, swimming, or take up something you have an interest in.

Aim for the 60 a day rule. Getting 60 minutes of physical activity, a day is enough to keep you fit.

Volunteer. There are quite a few opportunities for teen volunteers. One option is if you belong to a church or youth group that hosts a group to help build houses for the poor during summer. If your community doesn't have anything for teens, try your neighbors. Offer to mow lawns, pull weeds, or do other chores for the elderly or those that are unable to do these tasks on their own. You will be surprised how good it makes you feel. It also looks great on college applications when the time comes.

Get a summer job. Some wonderful jobs for teens are available at amusement parks, summer camps, landscaping companies, fast food outlets, and retail. Even if they aren't all physically demanding, it will keep your body moving enough. The real upside is extra spending money in your pocket.

Vegging in front of the TV or playing video games is relaxing and fun. However, it's not hard to implement these activities into your everyday life during the summer break from school. You will find your body stays conditioned and your mind is more active. Most important, enjoy your vacation.
